Artist's Statement
My art is both figurative and abstract. I have several series going at a time and jump to different genres. I find this keeps my mind open to the problem-solving painting experience. My preferred medium is oil and sometimes mixed media.
In my Seaglass series I use graphic scale as a vehicle to bring the viewer to an intimate experience with my subject. As I focus on the colorful glass pieces and their refractive qualities, transparency and translucent surfaces, I find abstraction in the details.
I think of man’s impact on the ocean, and vice-versa. Seaglass is the evidence of cast-off glass and its devolution by the motion of the waves and sand into pieces that are searched for as prizes and are appreciated and collected. They have a resurrection. My Seaglass series is about change and renewal.
My Abstracts have me on an intuitive path of act and react to find a sense of place. I allow my creative impulse to explore and build while the journey itself is where the magic happens. Organic and architectual elements emerge as my painting achieves it’s identity.
When I paint figuratively, I tell an empathetic story – I want to reveal a relationship, a moment or an ephemeral emotion and pathos.
Regardless if I’m painting portraits, objects or imaginary landscapes, my finish comes from the same meditative energy.
